‘Parathura’ is Ancient Greek for opening, referring both to doors and windows. Both are appropriate for this piece.

Functionally, it serves as a closure for a firewood dumbwaiter which accesses the supply in the basement beneath. Artistically, it is to be thought of as a window into the inner workings of a glacial ice structure, seen through the frame of the stonework. In conjunction with the fireplace opening adjacent, to which it is united by the steel mantle, a ‘Fire and Ice’ dynamic is established.

It is a small step from there to an ‘earth, air, fire, and water’ Aristotelian perception.
